Here's more from our Bali correspondent. Dozens of bags and pouches in beautiful colors and unique patterns are on display in a shop. This shop is run by the Center for Environmental Education or PPLH Bali, located in Sanur Bali. At first glance, they looked like factory-made goods, but these shopping bags, pencil cases and purses are actually hand-made products made from used plastic packaging. The creative idea is based on a mission by PPLH Bali, to help people see that doing something for the environment is actually quite simple. This can also increase job opportunities, as PPLH Bali is empowering women workers in this field. Take 2 packets of instant coffee singles (the ones that look like tea bags) and boil hard in about 1 and 1/2 cups of water until it boils down to about 3/4 of a cup of dark liquid. Mix just enough coffee into the powder to create a thick paste. The hot liquid will make the powder ball up a little, so be sure to mix it until it is well blended and smooth. Add about 2 tablespoons lemon juice; fresh is best. Add about 5 drops of Eucalyptus Oil. Add about 5 drops of Clove Oil. This should make a thin paste, but you don't want it runny. If it is too runny, add a little more sifted henna powder. If its too thick, add a little more coffee, or plain water. henna Mehndi paste recipe #2: Place about 2-3 tablespoons Henna powder in a glass, ceramic, or metal bowl Boil 1 to 1-1/2 cups of water. I Henna'ed! Here is my recipe... 1. 200g Jamila Henna (ordered from Amazon.com) 2. 50g Amla Poweder (ordered from Amazon.com) 3. 2c green tea (used 3 tea bags+2c water...let steep for 15 min) 4. 1/4c lemon juice 5. 2tbs honey 6. conditioner Mix first 5 ingredients above. Should be a very, very thick consistency and hard to stir. Cover and let sit for a couple of hours. While mix is sitting, shampoo and condition hair. Towel blot so hair is damp. Apply henna to hair in sections, making sure to fully cover each section. Start from the nape of your neck and work your way up. Cover with a plastic bag or plastic wrap and let sit for 6+ hours (I did 10). Smoking food at home is SO much fun! And so unbelievably easy! I can almost guarantee that you have all that you need to do this in your kitchen! Its super easy, and you wouldn't believe that flavour this simple yet unusual style of cooking can create! You will need 1 heavy based frying pan or a wok 2 big sheets of tin foil, to line the frying pan 1 cup of uncooked rice 3-4 teabags. Tear the tea bags open and use only the tea leaves on the inside. Your Imagination...Use whatever you have to create some more flavour, just always ensure you use dry ingredients. (You can even very the type or flavour of tea you use) Some examples: whole garlic cloves, lemon, orange or lime rind, woody herbs such as rosemary or thyme, a whole chille. The list is endless. Just consider what it is you are smoking. For example, fish and lemon are a classic combination, so use some lemon. Likewise, duck and orange. I could go on forever!! Place the frying pan on a high heat and wait untill you begin to see some smoke bellowing. YOU ARE NOW IN BUSINESS!! Get a wire rack or grill and pivot it on your frying pan. Onto this, you can place whatever it is you are smoking. Cover the meat or vegetables securely with another sheet of tin foil to ensure the smoke is trapped in. The heat from the smoke will cook the food whilst imparting a wonderful flavour., As a guideling, fish can be smoked from raw. Well, I went for a walk on the "moor", next door, this morning, and found a couple of rose-hips left on a wild rose. I thought I should show you how easy it is to use them and enjoy them. Select the nice firm shiny juicy-looking ones, once they have turned a rich glossy red, or dark orange. You don't have to use wild rose-hips. The cultivated roses in your garden are just as good, provided they have not been sprayed with chemicals that may be toxic. Indeed, the cultivated roses in your garden most probably have huge hips. They are fun to use, too, and have nice fragrant fruits. Of course, the rose-hip can be considered just a giant quince or apple. Or a quince can be considered a giant rose-hip. Compare the two, and you'll see what I mean, as they are all members of the rose family, and have similar fruits and flowers. Once you have gathered a quantity of rosehips, cut each of them in half lengthways. You will then find that the seedpods are filled with bristley-like fibres. These fibres will catch in your throat, if you eat them, so they must be carefully removed. I simply scrape them out with my fingernail, but you can use an implement like a knife or nail-file to do so. Once you have scraped the bristles out, you will be left with a hard fruity shell. (Not much flesh, perhaps, after all the effort, but it's very rich in Vitamin C, and quite a tasty fruit.)
